Helicopter Take-Off from Avonside

Just heading down to a relative’s place on Kerr’s Road, Avonside, to help them repair their roof following the earthquake and passed this helicopter taking off from Porritt Park in Avonside.

Looks like an airforce helicopter doing surveillance and checking out areas for damage. Didn’t particularly look like they had supplies on board. Good luck to them.

We heard yesterday from the police. Apparently there will be police and army stationed in our area from today to stop looters. So sad that these guys have to divert resources from areas that really need them to stop pricks from looting houses.

Update: I’ve been reliable informed by an RNZAF mate (Hi Aaron) that this is a UH-1H Iroquois, flown by 3 SQN, RNZAF.

    I’d be tipping that the site (NZ Raw) is commenting on recent NZ events (Christchurch earthquake – you may have heard of it) by reporting on the involvement of army and police in stopping looting, including the use of helicopters to do patrols over suburbs. The article even says as much ;). Given that part of NZ Raw’s stated purpose is to discuss news topics in New Zealand, the story and pic seem pretty appropriate. Your comment, not so much ;).

    And nice article Mark – you Kiwis (other than a few sods looting, but you get that everywhere) look like you’re doing a great job of pitching in and working together to manage this thing.
