Thanks for your comment Marie-Louise and yeah not a bad idea. I think there are projects specifically set up for community service work but at present I think they’re all focused on community buildings – i.e. working at Churches etc.

There are probably new issues that arise from assigning criminals to community service on private residences – some home owners may be reluctant to have anything to do with the original vandal – but I’m sure that could be overcome by discussing what’s involved with the victim and arranging close supervision of the work.

Just out of interest, would you be happy with the criminal coming back to your residence to clean-up the damage?

Thank you, Mark for covering this very irritating subject. In my opinion, removing graffiti should be part of every community service sentence for anyone under the age of 25 so they can spread the word among their associates of what a miserable job it is to remove the wretched, unwanted vandalism.
